Comfort Zones; Do you all know what a comfort zone is? It’s the space where you don’t really have to try, it’s the space of effort = achievement that you consider enough without pushing yourself. When you went to school did you put 100% into your studies? What do you think about that now? Could you have achieved more than you have? Do you regret having not made the effort to stretch those comfort zones back then?Honesty time: Now, I want you to ask yourself what stopped you making 100% commitment at that time? What were your priorities back then? If you’re still going to uni or school then apply this to now. Is it more important to watch a movie than to wash your clothes? What are your priorities think back and find some patterns of behaviour; you may find a clue as to why your life is like it is today.
Change does not happen by itself – not unless it is thrust upon you by fate. Look back to your past – to your history, do you remember a time when you achieved change, a time when you found the courage to cross the bridge between bad habit and positive result. What was that story; write it in your journal to remind you. How did it feel to be in the bad habit, and secondly how scary was it to learn how to do something new. A simple example. I used to be terrified of lifts; yes the thought of getting on elevators paralysed me with fear. I just could not get in one, and seeing we live in cities where buildings are 50 stories high, well that can be a problem if you have to go to one of those buildings. So my challenge was, to get past my fear into courage. You see I used to walk up and down those stairs to get where I needed to go; I refused to use the elevators. Fate gave me a shove when one day I damaged my knee, I had an appointment I could not miss, and so I had no choice, I had to find the hero inside of me and stretch my boundaries and go for it, I had to step into that lift and do you know what, that tiny step was so hard, so hard you would not believe, however I did it, and then slowly day by day, I made myself get into lifts until eventually I mastered my irrational fear. The same energy of that transition I have applied to all of my life, making phone calls, trying new things, learning new skills. I previously had been in a comfort zone that suited me fine, that is if I never wanted to go to the top of the Eifel tower. Now I want you to list in your Journal at least 7 things in your life that you want to change. Remember use your imagination to visualise the end results you want to achieve. Describe the end result in every detail you can imagine, define how you will feel, how life will improve and how you will benefit from the change. What are 7 comfort zones you stick to because they are safe? What are 7 things you can do to expand your comfort zone and face your fears, moving from comfort to achievement? Your list could include complex things like getting a BA or it may involve personal goals like, buying a home, loosing weight, stopping smoking. Make the list as complex or simple as you want. Next in your Journal write: How would these changes benefit your life? What are the positive changes that will flow on from these changes? Now you have your list; what do you need to do to make each item on the list achievable? Break the items on the list into small achievable steps. Next I want you to write one thing you can do towards your goal, today, what is your first step? Remember change doesn’t happen overnight, change only happens when an action becomes a natural behaviour. You will have to want the change more than you want the comfort. So if it means you walk 5miles today and every day for the next 6 months to get fit and loose that 10lb, then that is what you have to do. You begin with the end in mind. You start by walking 2 miles today then in a few days time up the distance to 3 miles then 4 then 5. Take the change one step at a time. But keep you eye on the end result – know what you want to achieve and know it is possible only from your commitment to change.
